Material exchange plates in material exchange columns having counterflow characteristics where the liquid is not drained off but passes through common openings (16) into which are fitted exchange elements consisting of a vertical cylinder (5) with slots (3) and guide vanes (4) closed at the top by cover (7). Pref. the exchange element may be two-tiered, both tiers being identically constructed. Additional, movable, plates (8) having a variety of openings may be fitted in one or both layers. The upper cover (7) may also have one or more openings.
