Measuring purity of carbon dioxide

The carbon dioxide purity measurement involves IR radiation absorption spectroscopy, restricted to the wavelength range of the absorption bands of a gaseous carbon dioxide molecule contg. the <13>C isotope. A photometer measuring the purity is provided with a detector which determines the radiation absorption by the gaseous CO2. By determining the fraction of the <13>C isotope, which occurs naturally at a 1.1% fraction, the purity of the gas can be evaluated. The detector used is a wide band detector and the wavelength range of the absorption bands of the carbon dioxide gas molecule contg. the <12>C isotope of the radiation penetrating the gas sample is faded out with optical filters, or damped.
