The steering wheel is fitted with a contact strip (10) on either side of the wheel rim, or on both sides. The contact strip is connected to a control circuit in which a clocking circuit (151) is programmed to active a warning if the contacts are not operated within preset time intervals. The warning can be optic (163) and/or acoustic (162). The contact strip has a central core conductor strip (1) inside an insulated coil. Cut-outs in the insulation enable the coil and core to contact when the strip is pressed. The warning system operates in stages, with a simple optic warning followed by progressively louder/longer acoustic warnings. The degree of warning is matched to the length of response of the driver.
