The coin tester has an analyser which receives signals representing the value and the number of accepted coins. The analyser adds the values to produce a credit value for comparison with a price held in a programmable store. A signal is produced when the credit value reaches the stored price. The store has at least one location for a predetermined coin value and at least one location for the number of steps derived from the difference between the stored price and a max. number of coins of the predetermined value. Any increase in credit value is blocked if more than this number of coins of this value are inserted into the tester.
