An indexing mechanism used in an articulating probe head on a coordinate measuring machine includes first (10) and second (12) bodies, rotatable relative to each other about an axis (A). Each of the bodies comprises a circular array of members (20, 30), each member being symmetrical about a radially extending axis of symmetry, with adjacent surfaces of adjacent members being mutually convergent. When the two bodies (10, 12) are engaged in a given indexed position, each member on one of the bodies seats in a pair of convergent surfaces provided between adjacent members (20) of the other of the bodies (10, 12). Additionally, the surfaces are curved in at least one of three mutually orthogonal planes, with the radius of said curvature being greater than half the spacing between adjacent members (20). This configuration provides a stiffness and repeatability comparable to that of a traditional Hirth coupling, while simultaneously providing some advantages, such as dirt immunity and comparatively open machining tolerances, of a kinematic support.
|
