Vehicle traction control system

A traction control system incorporates drive slip regulation with engine torque reduction when necessary by switching out cylinders or adjustment of individual cylinder ignition timing. From the slip control unit 26 is sent a signal to the engine management unit 20 giving the amount of torque reduction needed. This is achieved by a timing angle adjustment that is proportional to the signal and the engine speed, using a stored characteristic. When the adjustment angle has reached a maximum permitted value, then a cylinder is switched out of action. Further cylinders (including all cylinders) may be switched out if necessary and there is a second stored characteristic for this.
