Bipolar filter press cell for anodic oxidn. on smooth Pt, esp. for generation and regeneration of peroxodisulphate solns. and decomposition of pollutants, has a frame, monopolar electrode plates for supplying current and bipolar electrode plates, ion exchange membranes as separators between the plates, external leads and external separators for the electrolysis media. The electrode plates have (a) a substrate (1) of liquid-tight impregnated graphite; (b) a cathodic half-cell, consisting of the cathode, cathode compartment and spacer for the cathode membrane incorporated in or attached to the cathode side; (c) an anode half-cell, consisting of anode insulating plate (4), frame (6), anode and spacer for the anode membrane (10) attached to the anode side; and (d) inlet and outlet ports connected by pipes to the separators for the media. The novel features are that (e) the anodes (5) are made from strips, tapes or foils of smooth Pt with a thickness of 20-50 microns, placed on vertical contact strips (3) of impregnated graphite, which are 10-250, pref. 50-150 mm apart; (f) the anode insulating plates (4) consist of flexible, pref. heat-resistant plastics, e.g. EPDM, with recesses for the contact strips; (g) the contact strips (3) are covered by the anode frame (6) and vertical sealing strips (7) of the same type of plastics; and (h) the outer seals are O-rings (11) outside the contact strips (3) and ion exchange membranes (9).
