The instrument proposed has a device for stimulating the eye (20), e.g. a flashlight (58) producing an optical stimulus. The eye exposed to the stimulus or the other eye (20) of the person being examined is illuminated with infrared light from one or more sources (56). An infrared detector (62) with high time resolution receives infrared light reflected from the eye (20) and generates a signal corresponding to the intensity of this light. The change with time of this signal is measured and analysed. Disposed in the raypath of the reflected infrared light is a mirror (60) which is partly transparent to such light and which allows part of the light to fall on an infrared image sensor (CCD camera 52) with a viewing monitor (30).
