Variable damper for vehicle suspension strut

The damper has a main piston inside which a movable piston operates the bypass flow through the piston and thereby controls the damping characteristics. A pressure chamber (20) on the back of the piston is connected to the two sides of the piston by pairs of non-return valve which control the flow direction of the damping fluid. The non return valves include ball valves (24) as well as flap valves (22, 21). The pressure chamber (20) is fitted to the rear of the main piston and its inlet is controlled by the servo controlled variable valve (3). At least one of the non return valves is rotationally symmetric.
