The system uses a storage arrangement in which the spacing supports are made as convoluted preformed surface structures (12-16) with alternate parallel raised sections (17-19) and deep sections (20,21). In each layer (7-11) the surface structures partially enclose the stored tube-shaped objects (2-6) such that in any one layer (e.g. layer 11) neighbouring objects (2a,3a,4a,5a,6a) are alternately arranged in adjacent recesses (17a,20,18a,21,19a) on different sides of the surface structure (16).
