In a conventional device and method for preventing sticking on a display unit, such a measure has been taken that a display area or configuration is sequentially changed by reducing the brightness of a screen or darkening it with a small display area left bright when it is detected that keyboard inputting to a computer or mouse operation has not been performed for a certain period of time. However, in a case where a processing is performed in which a keyboard or a mouse is not used for a long period of time as in the case of installation of a large volume of software or reproduction of animations, a display unit sticking preventing function is put into operation at a non-consumption timing. To cope with this, instead of monitoring the operation of a keyboard or a mouse, whether or not a predetermined period of time has passed without an on-the-screen plotting processing routine being called (step S70) is checked, and when a predetermined period of time has passed without the on-the-screen plotting routine being called, in other words, without screen rewriting encountered, a predetermined value is written in a register of a CRTC (22) so as to cause image signals to be lost to thereby prevent the sticking on a CRT display unit (50). In addition, in a case where the CRT display unit (50) is equipped with a power saving function based on the frequency of a synchronizing signal, the power consumption of the CRT display unit (50) is reduced in cooperation with the power saving function by lowering the frequencies of horizontal and vertical synchronizing signals.
