A novel process is described for the asymmetric hydrogenation of furoimidazole derivatives of the general formula using hydrogen in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst to give the corresponding diastereomeric tetrahydrofuroimidazole derivatives of the general formula which are intermediates for the preparation of the vitamin (+)-biotin.
