Cpds. (I) of formula (Ia), (Ib), (Ic), and intermediates of formula (III), (IVa), (IVb), (V) and (VI) are new. Q = CHO or CH(OR')(OR"); R', R" = 1-4 C (un)satd. alkyl; or R'+R" = 2-4 C alkylene; R2, R5, R6 = H or Me; one of R1, R3 = H and the other = Me; Y = H, X = Q and R4 = H or Me; or Y =CH2Q, and X, R4 = H. In (Ib) and (IVa), the tert. butyl is in position 5 or 6.
