An absorbent article manufactured from a generally rectangular blank (4) has a fold (8) which is formed by folding the blank along at least two fold lines (9) on an outer casing sheet (2) in between one of the centre axises (20, 21) and corresponding one of the side edges (19, 18). The two folds (8) are formed in the inside of the article, whilst each of them runs along the lateral edges so that these folds (8), when raised, create leakage barriers. The height of the barriers is defined as the distance between the fold baseline and the fold folding line as measured perpendicularly to said fold line (9), and varies along the length of the barriers while being generally proportional to the dimensional change that occurs transversely to the fold (8) when folding the material. In the process of manufacturing the succession of semiproducts, in particular casing sheets, of the composite structure is kept. Each of the semiproducts is folded along at least two fold lines (9) located on the outside of the sheet (2) between one of the centre axises (20, 21) and corresponding one of the side edges (19, 18). |
