The device comprises at least one panel which extends substantially horizontally and at least two supports which extend substantially vertically, the supports being provided with notches and the panels extending at least partway into the recesses. This eliminates the need for separate bearing elements. The panels are preferably made from transparent material, for example glass, and the supports are formed by hollow bodies. The fact that the panels extend through notches into the interior of the hollow support means that the light which is emitted by the light source which is arranged in the interior of the hollow support can easily enter the glass panel, with the result that the glass panel is internally illuminated from the sides.
