Identification and anti-theft control of flat items in retailing

The flat item to be protected against theft has two principal faces (2a,2b), with one face (2a) carrying a bar coded label (2c) that identifies the item, and an anti-theft tag (2d) that can be magnetically deactivated. The other face (2b) carries a second identification label (2e) that carries a second identification code. The first and second identification codes are related by a predetermined relation. The codes may be identical or different. The two codes are read when the item is scanned and the relationship between the two codes tested to determine whether a single item is being scanned or multiple items have been scanned. If the pairing is correct the anti-theft tag is deactivated.
