The mask is made from a shell (2) of a supple material which fits over the patient's nose or nose and mouth, with an aperture (5) for attaching a tube and an annular reinforcing member (1) to ensure a close contact between the mask and face. Straps (6,7) hold the mask in place on the user's head. The reinforcing member (1) is attached to the outer surface of the mask shell and is made from a material which adapts to the shape of the face. It can be in the form of a pouch filled with a divided material with cohesion provided by subjecting the pouch to a vacuum, or it can be cut from a layer of a thermoplastic material. The fastening straps are attached to the mask so that they cross over as they pass around the patient's head.
