The printhead (22) on a carriage movable (23) across pages of the document (5) carries a free roller (29) which runs along a belt (19) having its ends (27) fixed to the frame (58), and depresses a portion (19a) of the belt between two smaller free rollers (31) into contact with the page. The elastomeric belt is fibre-reinforced for flexibility without stretchability in its own plane. The smaller rollers being very close to the head ensure a substantial gap between the horizontal portions of the belt and the plane of the table (3) on which the document is laid.
