A windscreen wiper unit (1) has a rain sensor (5) and one or more wipers (2) driven by a motor (3) at different speeds. The sensor varies the motor speed depending on the amount of rain measured through an electronic control unit (6) for a wiper unit with intermittent operation the interval between operations and/or the motor speed are varied depending on vehicle speed and sensor output signals. Pref. the motor speed is varied in steps.
