A fibrous material is obtained as a by-prod. in paper making by mechanically dewatering, disintegrating and drying a suspension which is an overflow from a sieving operation using a slotted hole sieve with a slot width of 0.15-0.5 mm or by sieving with a perforated sieve having a hole diameter of 1.5 to 2 mm. Disintegration is carried out in a breaker or shredder. Also claimed are the process for making the material, and the use of the material as a filler, as thermal or acoustic insulation, an absorbent, as a padding, and as a constituent and/or additive in the production of precast concrete shapes.
