In the conventional steel-rubber embossing of a web of paper, a rough side and a smooth side are produced. The subject of the application is a multi-ply household or sanitary paper in which at least two plies are embossed independently of each other and joined to each other by knurling in such a way that the outer sides of the outer plies are smooth. The gripping appearance and the quality of the embossed design are improved and the voluminosity of the household or sanitary paper is increased.
