Charging a blast furnace with piece-form substitute fuels such as coal, waste materials and the like has not been possible hitherto either from the top together with the burden (charge, ore and fluxes) (because of decomposition etc.) or from the bottom by injection, unless they are brought into an atomisable form. By means of the present invention, charging with the said substitute fuels is achieved by a pipe through which these substances are introduced into the so-called belly (bosh) (softening zone). In this manner, in particular waste products are successfully used as additional fuels directly in the blast furnace. The economic advantage, apart from the saving of coke, coal or oil, is the environmentally compatible disposal of the waste substances, for which the blast-furnace operator can demand appropriate compensation. In comparison with the injection method, the complex conversion of the substitute fuels into an atomisable form (if this is possible at all) is saved.
