The security system bars persons desiring to remove articles from premises via the check-out aisles from accompanying the articles through the aisles to their opposite ends. At least one path is separate from the check-out aisles and leads from the interior area to the common passageway, through which, persons are able to reach the opposite ends of the check-out aisles for article retrieval. An electronic article surveillance system is associated with said at least one separate path for detecting security tags carried through the separate path. There are several separate paths, each having an associated electronic surveillance system. The number of check-out aisles being greater than the number of separate paths.
