A rotor is suspended between at least two poles of an electromagnet, the windings of which are supplied from a current source, regulated by a sensor and on/off switches in series with the windings. A current source (12) delivers a constant current liq, divided (1a,1b), between two electro-magnet windings (10,11) and switches (24,15). A signal (u) from a sensor (6) causes the controller (16) and modulator (17) to open and close the switches (14,15) as required to maintain the rotor (1) in suspension between the poles (2,3) of the electro-magnets. The remote ends of the windings (18,19) are connected to the positive pole of the current source (12) through current blocking diodes (20,21).
