A filter element (2) is made of a stable, porous supporting body (4) provided with a fine porous fibre coating (6). In a first aspect of the invention, the fibre coating (6) has first fibres (10) longer than the pore size of the supporting body (4), and clearly shorter second fibres (12). In a second aspect of the invention, less than 30 % finely granulated particles (16) are distributed in the fibre coating (16). In order to produce the filter element (2), dry fibres (10, 12) are applied by means of an air current, before and/or after an adhesive is applied. Alternatively, fibres (10, 12) are distributed in a liquid and applied, and the adhesive may be contained in the liquid. In another aspect of the invention, a coating layer made of finely granulated particles (16) is applied on the fibre coating (6).
