Prepn. of p-alkoxybenzaldehyde cpds. of formula (I) comprises treatment of p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (II) with an alkyl halide of formula (III) in the presence of a base, the pH during the alkylation being held at 8.0-12.0: R = 1-6C alkyl; X = halo.
