The invention relates to a device for use in performing manual work which comprises a tool (2) and a shaft unit (3) securely attached to the tool; the force exerted by the operator is channelled via a grip section (5) of the shaft unit (3) into the latter and from there into the tool (2) to lift or lower the load carried on the tool (2). The grip section (5) is bow-shaped and lies substantially within the plane of the forces exerted during the lifting and lowering of the load.
