PURPOSE:To accurately discriminate and detect such a combustible gas as CO, H2, etc., front the light absorptance of a light-absorbing detecting material by bringing a gas to be inspected into contact with the detecting material under the presence of oxygen and irradiating the detecting material with light. CONSTITUTION:A plasmon absorbing detecting material composed of fine particles of at least one kind of metal selected form among Au, Ag, and Cu is used for discriminating and detecting H2 in the air. The CO contained in the air is discriminated and detected together with the H2 by using a detecting material which absorbs visible light and near infrared ray and is composed of the oxide of at least one kind of metal selected from among Ni, Co, Mn, Cr, and Ru. The wavelength of the light used for this measurement is normally adjusted to 300-200nm and the measuring temperature is adjusted to about 100-500 deg.C. At the time of measuring CO and H2, the light absorptance of the detecting material is measured at two wavelengths of a wavelength in the plasmon absorbing zone of the fine particles of the metal and another wavelength apart from the plasmon absorptance. The measuring method of the light absorptance includes a transmitting method (for thin films), diffuse reflection method (for powder and pellets), etc.
