PURPOSE:To provide a separator for batteries excellent in retention of electrolysis solution by sulfonating nonwoven fabric containing undrawn and/or drawn yarns containing a syndiotactic polystyrene. CONSTITUTION:A plasticizer such as polyethylene glycol is added to a polystyrene of syndiotactic structure and the resultant modified polystyrene lowered in glass transition point by >=5 deg.C is melt-extruded into undrawn yarns having 60-200% elongation at break. In the meantime, the modified polystyrene is used as one component and a polypropylene as the other to form a conjugated fiber wherein at least a part of the modified polystyrene is exposed on the surface of the fiber cross section. Then the fiber is drawn to give drawn yarns having 20-150% elongation. The undrawn yarns and the drawn yarns are mixed, card-webbed, then interlaced into a nonwoven fabric, then the fabric is treated with a sulfuric acid solution to effect sulfonation of the modified polystyrene. |
