The carbon black for pigment is prepared by (A) pyrolyzing the raw oil into carbon black in the thermal gas stream produced from the combustion of air and fuel oil in a reaction furnace, and (B) stopping the reaction by providing cooling water. The reaction furnace is characterized by expanding the angle of the outlet part(8) of the throat(4) to 1-7 deg. to suppress the development of chain-like structure of the carbon black. The raw oil is supplied through 6-12 oil spray nozzles. The obtained carbon black powder having 200-260 m2/g BET surface area can be pelletized for easy handling.
