PURPOSE:To perform a running with a safe distance between vehicles and a safe stoppage of vehicle by estimating the speed of driver's own vehicle from brake pressure and considering estimated speed as the substitution value for the speed of the vehicle only when the difference of the estimated speed and the speed of the vehicle is abnormality large by comparing the speeds. CONSTITUTION:This controller is provided with a brake pressure detection means 4, a means 11 estimating the present speed of the vehicle from brake pressure and a means 12 deciding an abnormality only when the difference of estimated speed and the speed of the vehicle is larger than a threshold and imparting the decision to a safe distance-between-vehicles calculation means 14 determining estimated speed as the substitution value for the speed of the vehicle, a preceding vehicle speed calculation means 15 and a target acceleration/deceleration speed calculation means 16. When an abnormal value is suddenly shown in the measured value of the speed of the vehicle in the process of deceleration, the speed of the vehicle estimated from the present brake pressure is used as the speed of the vehicle in place of measured speed. Therefore, the change of brake pressure can be evaded.
