PURPOSE:To provide the data base collation type input device which can specify a symbol string that an input operator intends as to a symbol (character) string which is inputted with the button keys or dial of a telephone set. CONSTITUTION:This device has an input means 1 for inputting a symbol string through the input device on which only character kinds less than symbol kinds that are possibly inputted, a character string converting means 3 which converts the symbol string consisting of plural inputted symbols into a character string, a candidate decision means 6 which decides whether or not a candidate for the converted character string really exists, and a user selecting means 5 which allows a user to make a choice when plural candidates really exist as a result of the decision of the means 6, and the candidate selected through the user selecting means 5 is specified.
