PURPOSE:To provide a navigation system that can gain and display accurate navigation information that follows roads on a map screen displayed on a display, without being affected by errors included in GPS data. CONSTITUTION:The position and direction of a vehicle are estimated by the use of a detection signal from a self-contained navigation sensor as a map data reference value obtained by map matching process which is carried out by checking GPS data obtained from GPS satellites with map information, and the estimated position and direction of the vehicle are displayed on a display, together with the map information. When no map data is being supplied, estimation is carried out with the GPS data serving as the reference value. Estimation data are provided with indexes for identifying data, and also with indexes that correspond to the map data, and processing of the data corresponding to each index is carried out. |
