PURPOSE: To give a driver more comfortable steering feeling than before without regard to the vehicle speed. CONSTITUTION: This steering assist system 10 includes a vehicle speed sensor 150 for sensing the vehicle speed and providing a speed signal with a value indicating the vehicle speed and a torque sensor 110 operatively connected to a steering wheel 12 for providing a torque signal indicating the applied steering torque, and provides steering assist in response to a steering control signal. A controller 120 connected to the sensors 150, 110 provides the steering control signal having a value functionally related to (i) the vehicle speed signal and (ii) torque-in vs. torque-out assist values.
