The index system has a register (1) along one edge of a book, reproducing the first letters of the words contained in the section of the book. On another edge of the book, there is a second register (2), which reproduces the second letters of the words contained in the book section. The first and/or second register may be marked in letters, numbers, combinations of them or symbols. The individual parts of the register may have a second register. The separate sides of the sheets may have indicators for the next signs of the second register.
