The column (11) has a spur gear (14) and the seat has a detent element (23) which fits into the spur gear to lock the seat against rotation. The spur gear is preferably at the top end of the column and the detent element is fixed on a holder (10) on the seat. The detent element can have an extension (22) which is displaceable parallel to the holder in order to move the detent element. The extension and holder can be designed so that they form a detent mechanism (27,28,29) which fits into a first position where the detent element engages in the spur gear and a second position where it does not.
