Transcutaneous method for determn. of in vivo blood concn. of a substance (I, e.g. glucose, lactate, sugar, cholesterol, alcohol and drugs), that does not involve taking a blood sample comprises: (1) measuring a spectroscopically generated signal that corresponds to the amts. of (I) and water in a predetermined region of the body and (2) determining the concn. of (I) in water from ratio of signals for (I), to establish the blood concn. of (I).
