The contact elements of the test device and the contact pads on the board (2) are aligned when the correct position is achieved. At least one contact pad (95a) and its associated contact element (95b) are offset w.r.t. each other compared to the other contact pad/contact element pairs so that in the correct position there is still a contact region between them but it is offset towards the edge of the contact pad. The direction of the offset corresp. to that in which a deviation from the correct position is to be detected. Either the contact pad or element can lie on a pad or element grid with the contact element or pad offset from the grid.
