Arresting device to set first element relative to second, e.g. to adjust seat height

The arresting device can set the relative position of an adjustable first element (1) relative to a second element (2) and lock it securely. The device includes a cylinder (3) with a movable piston (5) in it, which has a piston rod (6). There is also a mechanical brake (15). The operating element (8) passes outwards through the centre of the piston rod. When the operating element is pushed, the piston can move with the rod in the cylinder against a return spring (11). This results in the relative position of the elements to be adjusted. When the operating element is released, the braking spring force comes into effect, setting the brake to lock in the set position.
