The operating mechanism (4) is connected to the gearchange mechanism (2) by rods or cables (7,16). The operating force for the gearlever is controlled by a resistance mechanism. The gearlever is spring-loaded into a neutral position but is kept in the selected position by a ratchet mechanism which consists e.g. of a spring-loaded ball (17) and a segment (19) with indents in the locking positions. An additional ratchet mechanism (18) with indented segment (18) is used to locate parts of the resistance mechanism relative to one another.
