In the operation of a rolling mill stand (esp. a four-high temper rolling stand) having back-up rolls, a hydraulic screw down, a pass line adjuster and bending devices for the work and/or intermediate rolls, the requisite roll force for temper rolling is applied when a back-up roll is retracted by the bending device of one of the remaining rolls of the roll set of the retracted back-up roll.
