The device has a banding material storage unit (12) near the floor with banding material (14) wound on a drum (13), partic. thermically weldable plastic strapping. On posts (15,15') a cross bearer is vertically movable and forms a press plate for compressing the packing material. On the cross bearer is a unit (18) which is used for transport of the banding material and partic. for formation of a banding material closure unit.
