A system for locating buried objects preparatory to their excavation for salvage, clearance or treatment has a mobile centre (1) which controls the movements of one or more specialist amphibian vehicles (2, 3) by radio or cable links. The first vehicle (2) is equipped to receive/transmit data and instructions from/to satellite, aircraft or ground-based referencing systems and locates objects via wheel sensors which may be IR, US, X-Ray, pressure, optical or magnetic depending on the nature of the search. A second vehicle (3) carries a power-operated grab and microwave or laser equipment for the remote handling, clearing, treating or otherwise making safe a hazardous region e.g. minefield (4, 7auto7f).
