The fuel injector has a pair of plates (70,74) in front of the outlet with shaped slots (71,75) which overlap and form the required fuel spray nozzle. The first opening converges to the second plate which has a diverging opening. The ratio of opening areas of the first plate to the second plate is greater than or equal to one. This provides a diverging spray of the required shape. The openings are slots with sloping edges. The fuel is made to flow at different directions through the two plates to enhance the spray effect.
