PURPOSE:To increase a friction force exerted on a pulley and a belt even when the pulley is unreasonably pressed against the belt and to instantaneously generate a proper friction force according to an occasional situation. CONSTITUTION:A continuously variable transmission comprises a fixed pulley 7 on the input side fixed on an input shaft 1; and moving pulley 8 on the input side axially movably arranged on the input shaft 1; a fixed pulley 7 on the output side fixed on an output shaft 6: a moving pulley 8 on the output side axially movably arranged on the output shaft 6; a belt 5 run around pulleys 2 and 3 on the input side and the pulleys 7 and 8 on the outside side; and magnetic coils 13' and 13 arranged at the fixed pulleys 2 and 7. The pulleys, the belt, an the shafts are formed of a magnetic material. A magnetic circuit 18 is formed at the periphery of the coil so that a magnetic flux passes through the fixed pulley, the belt, and the moving pulley.
