PURPOSE:To provide a method for disproportionating trimethylamine which controls the by-production of the trace quantity of impurities such as acetonitrile by carrying out a reaction efficiently at a low reaction temperature in a method for reducing the amount of existing trimethylamine by disproportionating trimethylamine with ammnoniam etc. CONSTITUTION:Zeolite such as mordenite and clinoptylolite is used as a catalyst. Disproportionation is carried out in the presence of zeolite in which 80% or more, preferably 90% or more, of exchangeable cations are occupied by hydrogen ion. |
