VARIABLE LENGTH CODE DECODER AND METHOD FOR DECODING VARIABLE LENGTH CODE VALUE

摘要

PURPOSE:To reduce the storage capacity of reference tables without reducing the decoding speed of a variable length code by making a code length reference table independent of a code value reference table. CONSTITUTION:An n-bit input stream is given to a code value reference table 3. The table 3 gives a value obtained by decoding the variable length code included in the n-bit input stream. n-j bits of the n-bit input stream are given to a code length reference table 2. The table 2 is used to determine the code length of the variable length code included in the n-bit input stream. When operation is performed, n-j most significant bits are given to the code length reference table 2. The code length reference table separated from the code value reference table is used to reduce the whole of the memory capacity required for decoding of the variable length code.
