PURPOSE: To provide a method comprising making a secondary backing material for a tufted primary backing material substantially impervious to liquids to prevent an underpad, floor, etc., from staining due to spilled liquids or the like. CONSTITUTION: This method comprises the following process: a primary backing material 1 of polypropylene made by tufting nylon pile yarns is introduced with the piled surface turned upward, a secondary backing material 2 of polypropylene is then laminated on the primary backing material 1 via a joining roll 4 to effect bondedly setting; subsequently, a water-repellent finish such as a foamy fluorochemical, silicone, wax emulsion or hydrophobic acrylate resin is fed from a foaming system 8 to the resultant backing material laminate to form a foam bank between a lower press roll 6 and a traveling carpet to contactedly impart the secondary backing material 2 with the water-repellent finish, and the resulting secondary backing material 2 is then passed through a hardening oven 7 along with heat treatment and drying, thereby making the secondary backing material 2 substantially impervious to liquids. |
