Prodn. of a gaseous mixt. comprising a carrier gas containing very low quantities of at least one additional gas, comprises: (a) using at least one ampoule (1) which can be broken when submitted to a predetermined pressure between its internal and external pressures, where the external pressure is higher; (b) filling the ampoule with a predetermined quantity of the additional gas at a first pressure; (c) closing the ampoule; (d) placing the ampoule in a mixing chamber (60,62); and (e) filling the mixing chamber with a predetermined quantity of the carrier gas at a second pressure. The difference between the first and second pressures is greater than that required to break the ampoule, and the quantity of carrier gas is calculated to achieve the desired mixture in one go.
