The cathode for an electron tube wherein an electron emission material layer which contains barium, alkaline earths oxide, and components of rare earth metal oxide of 0.1 - 20wt% and alkaline earths metal oxide is formed on a gaseous metal which contains nickel mainly and a minute quantity of deoxidizer magnesium and silicon, is characterized in that the weight ratio of scandium metal oxide and yttrium component has the range from 90:10 to 60:40.
